Live Music: Jacob Furr
The Whiskey Snug presents an evening of live music with Jacob Furr---an award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, collaborator, and genre fluid artist from Fort Worth, Texas. His work blends West Coast folk with the dusty expanses of West Texas, and explores themes and stories of love, loss, grief, and recovery. He has toured the US since 2014. Furr has opened for Peter Case, James McMurty, Kelly Willis, Shovels and Rope, and Over The Rhine, among others.
Though Furr’s most significant work is a three album cycle over
10 years about the loss of his wife to brain cancer in 2013, his
songwriting paints pictures of thunderstorms on the Llano
Estacado, cemeteries of lost life boat sailors in California, and
the intimate feelings and details of recovery and healing. All of
these stories and themes are blended into songs that range
from towering electric anthems of lost stars, to intimate, solo
work that recalls Bert Jansch and early Josh Ritter.

Beth and Brandon combine their classical, folk, jazz and choral music training to create a modern perspective on a vintage sound. Live Music: Kelley Smith
The Whiskey Snug presents an evening of original live music with touring Folksinger/songwriter, Kelley Smith.
Kelley Smith is a hopeless romantic who fancies old poetry and grandpa sweaters. All at once whimsical and haunting, Smith delivers deeply affecting lyrics with wry charm and a time traveler's voice. Prone to melancholy and daydreaming, Kelley spent her childhood roaming the woods of Minnesota and singing to forest animals. To this day, her longing for that landscape runs deep and seems to find its way into her songs in one way or another.
Raised by musicians, Smith always had music in her bones, but it wasn't until she was 40 and a mother of four that her first record, Moon Child (2022), came to be. As an insomniac, she wrote this first batch of songs by moonlight. They evoke a sense of belonging, juxtaposed with escapism, as she croons about long-term love, grief, and her draw to the night sky.
Since 2022, Kelley has had the honor of sharing stages with folks such as Charlie Parr, Kelly Hunt, Wild Horses, Dave Simonett, Alan Sparhawk, Stephen Wilson Jr., and many others. Most often performing solo or as a duo, Smith interprets old folk songs on guitar and banjo, in addition to her original music.
”In its truest form, folk music requires us to slow down, listen closely, and let ourselves be absorbed by stories that take us to another place and time. And there might be no better example of that in the Minnesota music scene than Kelley Smith. These organic and unvarnished songs reflect life experiences that could as easily come from past lives as they could from Kelley’s soul.”
- David Dennison [Rieder Homestead Concerts]
”...armed only with her guitar and a spine-tingling voice, you couldn’t tell she’s only been at this a couple years. Smith transported the room into a realm of enchantment both beautiful and sorrowful. With deeply affecting lyrics and haunting melodies, Smith shared stories we could all relate to. Her solo acoustic set created an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability, allowing the audience to connect on a deep and personal level..”
- Carol Roth [Adventures in Americana]

Live Music: Alex Teller
The Whiskey Snug presents an evening of live music with touring folk singer-songwriter, Alex Teller!
With his vintage country voice & narrative lyrics, Alex creates music that’s as honest & authentic as the artist himself. Born in Florida, and raised in the suburbs of Long Island New York, Alex moved to Michigan at 19 where he found a jackpot of traditional songs through his deep love for Jerry Garcia & the music of The Grateful Dead. Teller soon started a solo career playing shows & began diving deep into traditional Folk music & the sounds that inspired him the most. Endless nights studying & transcribing the works of writers like Bob Dylan, John Prine & Townes Van Zandt turned into a whole new wave of inspiration & songwriting.
Alex released his debut self-titled EP, “Alex Teller” in January of 2023. The album consists of four original songs, drawing sounds from traditional American songwriters such as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson, in both a nostalgic & fresh way. Produced by the artist himself, “Alex Teller” expresses a tasteful classic tone, fitting for an artist who’s roots drink from the deep well of America’s traditional folk music & the lore of storytelling. While shaping & molding the album, Teller collaborated with an all-star lineup of Michigan music legends (including Peter Madcat Ruth, Drew Howard, and Bill Fuller), adding brilliant color & texture to each of his heartfelt songs.
